A manhunt ended in Texas when a Houston man accused of shooting and killing a deputy serving a warrant on him in the parking lot of a Dollar Tree, was fatally shot by police.

A Texas sheriff's deputy was fatally shot Wednesday while trying to serve an arrest warrant, setting off a wide search in Houston that ended hours later with officers shooting and killing the suspect,

An officer was hospitalized and police were searching for one person after a shooting Thursday morning in southwest Houston, officials said. Officials with the Houston Police Department provided limited details about the shooting on Twitter, saying preliminary information was that someone had shot an officer from another agency and fled on foot.

The officer who died was identified as Jesus Vargas, a 17-year veteran of the Brazoria County Sheriff's Office. Police later killed the suspected shooter, 56-year-old Robert Davis III, after an hours-long manhunt.

During the chaos, law enforcement officers carried the US Marshals K9 to a Texas DPS helicopter so that it could be rushed to a veterinary hospital for treatment.
