LAPD Assistant Chief Dominic Choi said an arrest was made Thursday afternoon in Woodland Hills after a man was allegedly attempting to light a fire.

A possible arson suspect was arrested Thursday night near the Kenneth Fire area as fire crews continue battling flames burning near homes in Calabasas and West Hills. At around 4:30 p.m., Los Angeles police responded to reports of a man attempting to light a fire in the 21700 block of Ybarra Road in Woodland Hills.

The alleged arson was reported about 5 and a half miles from the approximate start of the Kenneth fire, near Victory Boulevard west of Gilmore Street in West Hills. Residents in the area found the person and held him down until police arrived, KTLA reported.

The arrest occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Ybarra Road, just south of the fire’s origin, after local residents reportedly spotted the suspect attempting to ignite a blaze. The residents detained him until police arrived, with photos shared on the Citizen app showing officers surrounding the scene where the man was taken into custody.

The suspect, who was not named, was arrested near the Kenneth Fire at about 4:30 p.m. when police were called out to a report of a man attempting to light a fire in the 21700 block of Ybarra Road in Woodland Hills. Police were helped by residents who secured the man until law enforcement arrived.

A 960-acre brush fire sparked in the Woodland Hills area near the 101 Freeway Thursday afternoon. The Los Angeles Fire Department said that the fire was quickly burning toward the south, relatively close to homes before they were able to establish perimeter lines.

A group of residents in Woodland Hills helped arrest a man who was allegedly trying to start fires. A police source tells FOX 11 the man may be connected to the Kenneth Fire.
