This isn’t the first time that BMW has teased the new heads-up display called BMW Panoramic iDrive. The company showed off a version of it at CES 2023 in the iVision Dee concept, and it’s all part of the new platform called BMW Operating System X.

The new "BMW iDrive" system, including windshield-length display, and "BMW Operating System X" was revealed Tuesday during the CES tech show.

The terminology, in typical Germanic fashion, is a little confusing. The entire system is called "Panoramic iDrive," with “Panoramic Vision” being the funky horizontal band display across the whole dash; meanwhile, the all-new software the whole enchilada runs on is named “BMW Operating System X.”

Dubbed BMW Operating System X, this new system integrates a panoramic screen projected on the windshield, with a lower media screen that can be used as a touch-based controller. The new BMW Panoramic iDrive will debut before the end of 2025 with the introduction of the Neue Klasse generation of BMWs.

This is a big moment, folks: BMW has revealed its all-new iDrive infotainment system at CES in Las Vegas, and it represents a complete rethink on how to weave tech into a car. Starting from scratch; a clean slate; hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del on the past. Buckle up, because sacrifices have been made.

Pour one out for the iDrive knob. Nearly a quarter-century after debuting in production form back in 2001 in the E65/E66-generation 7 Series and becoming a staple of the carmaker's models, BMW is retiring the trusty click-wheel controller with the arrival of its newest Panoramic iDrive system.

The remade in-cabin experience is highlighted by the new Panoramic Vision head-up display, which extends from side to side.

BMW iDrive system debuted way back in 2001. In the 24 years since, the technology has only gotten bigger, better, fancier, and all-around more advanced. But this latest upgrade might be its most significant yet.
