On Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service (NWS) office in Tallahassee, Florida, posted a satellite image to X (formerly Twitter) that was taken around 9:50 a.m. local time. The image, which NWS Tallahassee called a "historic," showed snowfall throughout the Florida panhandle, as well as in Alabama and Georgia.

Tuesday and Wednesday delivered a winter wonderland for some and delayed travel plans for others as an unusual layer of snow and ice coated North Florida. Preliminary storm data from the National Weather Service show as much as six inches of snow in Bonifay in Holmes County and in Fountain and Cedar Grove in Bay

There is a 30 percent chance of showers in Miami on Thursday, which will occur mainly between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. Eastern time. It will be mostly cloudy at night. Temperatures will range from about 71 to 51 degrees Fahrenheit.

In Florida, the Panhandle experienced record-breaking snow, with Milton recording 8.8 inches, breaking a previous record set in 1954.

“North winds 25 to 30 knots with gusts up to 45 knots. Seas 7 to 10 feet, occasionally to 13 feet,” the NWS marine forecast from Fernandina Beach south to St. Augustine said. “Intracoastal waters very rough. Showers. Freezing rain after midnight.”

The National Weather Service just dropped updated snowfall totals, with Milton now up to 9.8 inches. This will be the final total and, if verified, may stand as the new Florida state record for snowfall. A previous record was 4 inches, also set in Milton in 1954.
